Alan Wake's American Nightmare is a 2012 action-adventure video game developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by Microsoft Studios. The game is a downloadable follow-up and spin-off to its predecessor, Alan Wake. American Nightmare takes place in Night Springs, a dark Twilight-zone-esque reflection of the town of Bright Falls from Alan Wake where Alan has become stranded.
The game features many Remedy Entertainment staple elements, such as Norse mythology, environmental storytelling, fourth wall breaks, naming puns, narrative jumping, horror elements, in-fiction media and ventures outside of the game's core genre.
The Poets of the Fall track The Happy Song can be heard on an in-game television showing the game's antagonist Mr Scratch dancing maniacally in a motel room. Mr Scratch is Alan Wake's evil doppelganger. During the game's final boss fight against Mr Scratch, the Old Gods of Asgard track Balance Slays the Demon plays over loudspeakers, giving a diegetic clue similar to The Poet and the Muse from the first game.
The player can find a radio playing Pat Maine's show from the first game. The discussion with a call-in guest is on the subject of the Old Gods of Asgard making a 2012 comeback. It's mentioned that while they sound like old men in conversation, on-stage they sound strangely like Poets of the Fall. This is of course an easter-egg joke about the fact that in reality Poets of the Fall provides the music of Old Gods of Asgard.
Trivia
- Balance Slays the Demon contains the reversed lyrics "It will happen again in a town called Ordinary." This is a teaser for the following game in the Remedy Cinematic Universe - Control, which would continue Alan's story.
