Balance Slays the Demon was made under the in-fiction name Old Gods of Asgard for the 2012 Remedy Entertainment game Alan Wake's American Nightmare. The track plays over speakers in the final boss fight against Mr Scratch, giving diagetic clues to the player.

The game contains a music video of the track, featuring footage of gameplay. The runtime is abbreviated at 3:36.

Balance Slays the Demon was released as a single later in 2012. On 19th February 2016, the track was included as the third and final track on the EP Memory Thought Balance Ruin.

Lyrics

(Deep in the ocean of darkness
In the mirror of light
Balance becomes a stranger
And in your fantasies
He writes a storm on your peace)

(Beyond the shadow you settled for
There is a miracle illuminated)

Deep in the ocean of darkness
In the mirror of light
Balance becomes a stranger
And in your fantasies
He writes a storm on your peace
Wake up and smell the danger

Ever the light casts a shadow
Ever the night springs from the light

In the end, it's never just the light you need
When balance slays the demon, you'll find peace
In the end, it's never just the dark you seek
When balance slays the demon, you'll find peace
Find your peace

(Beyond the lake he called home
Lies a deeper darker ocean green)

Like an evil twin, feel it scratching within
Like an insane sudden raging
And his beautiful face in his leather and lace
So can't you see the play he's staging?

Ever the light casts a shadow
Ever the night springs from the light

In the end, it's never just the light you need
When balance slays the demon, you'll find peace
In the end, it's never just the dark you seek
When balance slays the demon, you'll find peace
Find your peace

(Reversed: "It will happen again, in another town, a town called Ordinary")

In the end, it's never just the light you need
When balance slays the demon, you'll find peace
In the end, it's never just the dark you seek
When balance slays the demon, you'll find peace
Find your peace

(Screaming, mute darkness, descend on this frail frame!
I drown in fathomless black space, light never scratched the depths of this domain
I see not, yet nothing could be worse than the shades my mind calls herein
Alone, at my own wake, the unraveling of reason's skein)

Trivia

  • The reversed speech is a reference to Control. Ordinary is where the game's protagonist comes from and the events that happened there are a central part of the game's plot.
