The Sea of Night is a track by Poets of the Fall's alter-ego band Old Gods of Asgard that features exclusively as the ninth and final track on OGoA's 2023 debut album Rebirth: Greatest Hits, although it is alluded to in Alan Wake II. The track takes the form of a Nordic rowing song blended with 80s metal.
Lyrics
The Sea of Night raging fire in our veins
As life will wax and wane
Like music we'll hear your waves once more
And sail to another shore
The gold of a silent past, the moon in silver cast
Its shine a vision quest, for us it gives no rest
Through the beat of time, the flowing waves of rhyme
We are guided by, Odin's all seeing eye (the all-seeing eye)
The Sea of Night running dark in our veins
As life will wax and wane
Like music we'll hear your waves once more
And sail to another shore (shore)
Northern shore
On the dreaming sea, where darkness sets us free
Free of our worldly cares, we became corsairs
And into wondrous worlds, we go with sails unfurled
To battles, lost and won, to madness and beyond (we go beyond)
The Sea of Night running dark in our veins
As life will wax and wane
Like music we'll hear your waves once more
And sail to another shore (shore)
On the branches of life's tree, witness reality
Split up into myriad lives, beyond all divides
We have been warriors, poets and elder gods
Brought back a bounty to our homeland and you
The Sea of Night raging fire in our veins
As life will wax and wane
Like music we'll hear your waves once more
And sail to another shore
Northern shore
The Sea of Night raging fire in our veins
As life will wax and wane
Like music we'll hear your waves once more
And sail to another shore
Trivia
- The term "Night Sea Journey" was used by Carl Jung (heavily tied to the lore of Control) as an alternate phrasing of "Dark Night of the Soul".
- The line "We have been warriors, poets and elder gods" is a meta-reference to three tracks from the original Alan Wake - War as Poets of the Fall, as well as The Poet and the Muse and Children of the Elder God as Old Gods of Asgard.
- The track's lyrics bear a heavy similarity to Beyond the Horizon.
- The phrase "sea of night" is given context in the Alan Wake II Night Springs DLC's "Time Breaker" episode as being the fabric of the multiverse.
