Space Debris is an acclaimed [1] Amiga Mod created by Markus Kaarlonen and released unofficially under the pseudonym "Captain" in 1991. Kaarlonen was 17 at the time, with no musical education of any kind. The track was sampled using a primitive home enthusiast sampler connected to Captain's Amiga. Sampled instruments included a Roland D5 synthesizer, Roland R-8 drum machine and preset sounds that came with the tracker. Space Debris took part in the Anarchy Easter Party 1991 (a music competition in Sweden) and won the first prize.
In 2011, Kaarlonen provided the soundtrack for the game Rochard. For a scene in the game that takes place in a kind of futuristic space disco, the idea arose to use the old Amiga Mod in the scene. The Spacesynth Remix was created as a result, incorporating instruments from the Italo Disco and Spacesynth genres that had inspired the original track. It was included as the ninth track on the soundtrack.
Kaarlonen posted the Spacesynth Remix and a remastered version of the original track to YouTube on 10th November 2021 with the intention of remaining faithful to the original.
Trivia
- In the original Amiga Mod, Captain utilized a creative trick to eliminate the clicking at the end of sustained loops by using an audio editor to add fades at either end of the loop and then overlapping them. This is known in the industry as crossfading.
- Why "Space Debris"? To my best recollection, I first came up with the word “debris”, probably by browsing through a dictionary and picking an English word that sounded good to me. Then a friend of mine suggested something to the effect of “let’s add the word 'space' in front of it, space is cool, it also makes the mod name cooler”. Simple as that! - Captain
- Space Debris bears a strong resemblance to "You & Me" by Laserdance, a band that Captain has cited as an inspiration behind the track.
