Jaako Mäkinen, more commonly known as Jaska and formerly referred to as the anglicised Jake is one of the original members of the "live band" that performed with Poets of the Fall in music videos and on tours since 2005's Lift. Since 2008 he has been a full member of the band, initially as a rhythm guitarist but more recently has also had numerous lead guitar parts or alternating leads with Olli Tukiainen. For instance, the lead guitar on The Ballad of Jeremiah Peacekeeper is played by Mäkinen and the two guitarists intertwine lead parts in Love Will Come to You. He also occasionally provides backing vocals.
Mäkinen met one of the founding members of Poets of the Fall, Olli Tukiainen, at the Pop & Jazz Conservatory, and through this, after his own reconsideration, joined the band as rhythm guitarist. He graduated from Metropolia University of Applied Sciences as a pop/jazz music pedagogue in 2006 and has taught at various music institutes and schools in the Helsinki metropolitan area.[1]
Mäkinen has worked as a freelance musician since 1999, playing in Jaako Pesola Band, Hit Wheel[2], Cancercult[3] and Rosenlew Brass Band. Since 2009 he has played in Kaija Koo's backing band.
