Alan Wake is the titular protagonist of the Alan Wake series, also appearing in Control as part of Remedy Entertainment's interconnected stories, called the Remedy Connected Universe. Wake is voiced by Matthew Porretta and his game model is based on the appearance of Ilkka Villi. Villi performs as Wake in live action footage.
Alan Wake (1)
Wake is a writer who has tapped into the mystical powers of Cauldron Lake to inadvertantly rewrite reality through his writings. During the first game, he makes contact with the surviving members of Old Gods of Asgard - Odin and Tor Anderson. Later he hears the song War playing on a radio. He discovers a secret about Cauldron Lake in the song The Poet and the Muse. At the game's climax he fights a horde of Taken at the Andersons' estate as Children of the Elder God blares out of stage speakers.
Alan Wake's American Nightmare
Wake is rivalled by a dopellganger called Mr Scratch, who dances to The Happy Song. The final confrontation with Scratch at a drive-in theater has Balance Slays the Demon playing in the background.
Quantum Break
A teaser trailer for Alan Wake II can be found near the start of the game, featuring Villi as Wake. Several references to Wake are made throughout the game as well as Old Gods of Asgard.
Control
Several references to the events of the first Alan Wake are scattered through the game. Jesse Faden notes that her recollection of Thomas Zane (later revealed in DLC to be Wake's alter ego) is as a poet (as in Alan Wake 1) rather than everyone else's belief that he is a film-maker (as in Alan Wake II). The AWE DLC focuses on tying Alan Wake fully into the Control universe, with Cauldron Lake being an Altered World Event tracked by the Federal Bureau of Control. Faden receives visions through the Hotline from Wake at his typewriter in the Dark Place that guide her to defeat Dr Hartman.
Alan Wake II
Wake is credited as a featured performer on the Old Gods of Asgard song Herald of Darkness, alongside Warlin Door (portrayed by David Harewood). In Alan Wake II, Herald of Darkness forms the backbone of the "We Sing" chapter as a dynamic track that varies through the sequence. Video screens throughout show Mr Door (Harewood), Alan Wake (Villi), Odin Anderson (Saaresto), Tor Anderson (Kaarlonen), Bob Balder (Tukiainen) and Sam Lake (as himself) dancing to the music. Saga Anderson attempts to bring Alan out of the Dark Place by getting the Old Gods to play Dark Ocean Summoning.
Trivia
- Alan Wake publishes under the abbreviation A. Wake - a play on "awake". The name of his wife Alice also fits this pun. The name Saga Anderson (S. Anderson) may be a more strenuous pun relating to the Sandman.
- In Quantum Break, a Monarch employee can be found playing Alan Wake at their PC and singing Children of the Elder God.
