Miika Hakala is a Finnish indie filmmaker and music video director who has directed Poets of the Fall's music videos since Moonlight Kissed. He also directed the videos for Ollie T's Firefly and Larry Sandman's Upside Down ft Marko Saaresto.

It was the year 2005. It started like any other year, but turned into an emotional rollercoaster, for various reasons, with Poets of the Fall’s debut album, Signs of Life, serving as the soundtrack.
I remember wandering the streets in pouring rain and falling leaves, a portable music player armed with Late Goodbye and other classics in my pocket, feeling like a brokenhearted Bogart from film noir.
Ever since those days the music by Poets of the Fall has been an endless source of inspiration for me as a filmmaker, as a storyteller and as human.
Quite unexpectedly I got to revisit the album last fall as we began pre-production on the music video for Stay, the sixth track on Signs of Life. Hearing just that one song brought it all back to me. The people, the moments, all of it, even after sixteen years. That is the power of music.

Miika has a brilliant mind and he’s very rich with ideas and his attitude to making film and video alike is very eclectic. It’s like there is no ego there, nothing standing in the way of progress and expression, just raw talent. We are all after the best possible presentation of our ideas and we all have a wish to grow as artists. I also think it’s valuable to surround yourself with people you can learn something from.[1]

It’s funny, when I heard the Late Goodbye for the first time it felt like a title song for the type of movie I always wanted to make. That’s when I knew these guys see the world in the same way as I do, and I could only hope to be able to collaborate with them at some point. I also love Remedy’s games so there’s that too!

Sometimes the band has clear ideas about what they want to do with the project. Then I’ll just add my thoughts into the mix, and we got this nice amalgamation of ideas. Sometimes they give me more of a free reign like in Moonlight Kissed and Dancing on Broken Glass. Still, it’s always very much a collaborative effort!

Moonlight Kissed was my first Poets video so it’ll always have a special place in my heart. I think Dancing on Broken Glass says something fundamental about human spirit and life in general so there’s that. I really love all those experiences for different reasons. If I think about the videos where I wasn’t involved, I’d have to pick Late Goodbye or Carnival of Rust. Late Goodbye has that driving through the night thing going on which I just adore as you probably know by this point. The concept behind The Sweet Escape / Partir Avec Moi is very subtle.[2]
