Carnival of Rust is the band's third single and probably their most well-known track, released on 22nd March 2006 in Finland and charting at #2. It has commonly featured in the encore of live events ever since its release.

On 12th April 2006, Carnival of Rust was included as the eponymous third track on Poets of the Fall's second album.

On 30th March 2006, a music video was released for Carnival of Rust, directed by Tuomas "Stobe" Harju[1] and produced by Nitro FX. The MV became hugely popular in Finland, winning two Muuvi Awards as well as the YLE Audience Choice Award as "Best Finnish Music Video of All Time". It was also voted "Best Music Video 2006" by The Voice.[2]

The video was also voted as "Best Finnish Music Video of All Time" by YLE TV2 Musiikki-TV , receiving 21.2% of all votes, almost 7 times as many votes as the runner-up. [1] [3] The single was released in Germany on 1st December 2006.

On 12th July 2009, the video was remastered by Elmeri Raitanen as his bachelor-thesis in visual and media arts at Lahti Institute of Design, and reissued in high definition. The original version has since been removed from YouTube, likely to avoid splitting the views, with only this new "special edition" version now available.

On 22nd April 2016, Indian DJ duo Lost Stories created a remix of the track, released under Universal Music Group as a digital single alongside a live performance video. Also in 2016, PotF recorded a version of Carnival of Rust on Genelec Artist Room Live.

In 2020, the track was performed live and unplugged by the full band featuring Triosis+ as the December entry of the Alexander Theatre Sessions.

Lyrics

D' you breath the name of your saviour in your hour of need
N' taste the blame if the flavor should remind you of greed,
Of implication, insinuation and ill will, till' you cannot lie still
In all this turmoil, before red cape and foil come closing in for a kill

Come feed the rain
Cos I'm thirsty for your love dancing underneath the skies of lust

Yeah feed the rain
Cos without your love my life ain't nothing but this carnival of rust

It's all a game, avoiding failure, when true colors will bleed
All in the name of misbehavior and the things we don't need
I lust for after no disaster can touch us anymore
And more than ever, I hope to never fall, where enough is not the same it was before

Come feed the rain...

Don't walk away, don't walk away, oh, when the world is burning
Don't walk away, don't walk away, oh, when the heart is yearning

Stobe Harju, MV Director

Bittersweet mood, Tarot cards and rust. Those were the first three things we talked about when planning the promo with the guys. Beautiful song & a great great album, even better than their debut imo.[4]

I think the video dealt with the heart of the lyrics. Sometimes you have things that don't seem important to you before they're gone, and when they start walking away and you realize it, it's too late or physically impossible to get them back. The funny thing is that the song deals with love, whereas in the video the setting is a platonic love affair between two challenged characters that have one crucial difference to the others around them. They're able to see how sick the world is around them and are poisoned by it. The inspiration to the whole setting just came from something that Marko said to me in one of our brainstorming sessions. When I asked him why would he make songs about larger tragedies of the world when everything seems fairly alright in Finland, he told me to turn on the tv and the news to see how sick the world was around us.[5]

Trivia

  • All tracks from the album are referenced in the MV, such as the "Delicious" tattoo.
  • At the "Drumming Bears" stand in the MV, Signs of Life era drummer Tapio Sutela morphs into Jari Salminen, the band's current longstanding drummer.
  • There is text in the MV that says "Break for Freedom" and "House of Dusk". These could potentially be foreshadowing the next two albums - Revolution Roulette and Twilight Theater.
  • The second line of the chorus is quoted in the track Skin.
  • The ticket seen at the end of the MV reads "Cor Cordis", which means "Heart of hearts" in Latin. "CoR" is also the track's acronym.
  • One significant change made over the years with live performances is the soft voicing of the word kill, for dramatic effect. This can be heard in the Alexander Theatre Sessions and Genelec Artist Room Live versions.
  • When interviewed, MV director Stobe sent his greetings to PotF fans and called them "crazy." The band stated on their website they agree with Stobe, but added: "They are also the best fans in the world, period."[3]
  • Carnival of Rust has a lyrical overlap with The Game:
It's all a game, avoiding failure when true colors will bleed - Carnival of Rust
    vs
Her clashes of colors are flashes of society in ashes - The Game
  • The red and white spiral lollipop synonymous with Carnival of Rust is referenced in the MV for False Kings along with other iconic Poets of the Fall imagery.
  • The Tarot cards shown on the boards next to Zoltar's box are as follows: The Star, Nine of Swords, The High Priestess, Eight of Cups, Nine of Wands, Ace of Wands, The Magician, The Star, Strength, Ace of Cups, Nine of Swords, The Star.
  • The single's copyright statement ends with "And bedbugs are invisible to the naked eye."
  • The Pierot-like character in the box, known as Zoltar was arduous to replicate the makeup for. As a result, the makeup was toned down for the later music videos Cradled in Love and Can You Hear Me and also so it could be done on-stage, such as with Live in Moscow. One can see in the lyrics booklet for Temple of Thought that the new version of the character is called Jeremiah Peacekeeper, as in "The Ballad of Jeremiah Peacekeeper."
