Alchemy Vol. 1 is a compilation album CD and DVD combo released by Poets of the Fall on 16 March 2011, featuring tracks from Signs of Life, Carnival of Rust, Revolution Roulette and Twilight Theater as well as two new tracks and all of the music videos released up until that point.
The two new tracks are Can You Hear Me and No End, No Beginning, both only available physically on this release. Can You Hear Me was released digitally on 2 February 2011 and is featured in the remake of Remedy Entertainment's video game Death Rally.[1] A music video was released for Can You Hear Me, directed by Mikko Härmä of Kolera Productions. Surprisingly that video is not included on the DVD.

Artwork
Front Cover
Alchemy Vol. 1's key artwork is of an ouroboros in red on white. The ouroboros is a snake, worm or dragon eating its own tail and traditionally symbolises a recurring cycle, repetition and/or infinity. The creature resembles a Chinese dragon and has two crowns - one at the top above its head and one over its body to the right of the image. Oroborous symbolism was used by the alchemists in association with pursuit of the Philosopher's Stone and likened to the Yin and Yang of Taosim (which can be seen on the cover of Signs of Life), the end result of Taijitu - which resembles the Lollipop from Carnival of Rust. Given that Marko Saaresto's background includes acupuncture, this is likely not a coincidence.
Back Cover
The album's back cover is laid out as an alchemical transmutation circle with the expressed intention of transmuting the track listing into the name of the album, represented by a symbol that is also used for the Fall season. This is the only season that doesn't include the symbol for Sun. Spring and Late Summer have the same symbol, as do Winter and Early Summer. Fall appears to have a blood stain while Winter appears to be on fire or smudged. The looped track listing (like the oroborous) fits the sentiment behind No End, No Beginning, the album's last track.
